    How to calibrate E-steps

    1. Heat the hotend to printing temperature.
    2. Send M503 and note the current M92 E value.
    3. Mark the filament 120 mm above the extruder inlet.
    4. Send M83 then G1 E100 F100 to extrude 100 mm slowly.
    5. Measure from the inlet to the mark. If 20 mm is left, exactly 100 mm went through.
    6. Enter the numbers above, then send M92 E… and M500 to save.
    New E-steps = current E-steps × requested ÷ actually extruded

Repeat once to confirm. Klipper users set rotation_distance instead: new = old × actual ÷ requested.

    Frequently asked questions

What are good E-steps for an Ender 3?

The stock Ender 3 extruder is 93 steps/mm; dual-gear upgrades are often around 130–140. Always calibrate your own.

Should I calibrate E-steps or flow first?

E-steps first (the extruder), then flow rate (per filament) with a printed test.
