How to calculate EV charging cost

kWh per month = miles ÷ efficiency (mi/kWh) × 1.10 charging losses cost = kWh × (home price × home share + public price × public share)

Efficiency comes from each model's EPA range and battery size. Charging at home is usually 2–4 times cheaper per kWh than DC fast charging, so the share of public charging changes the result more than anything else.

Default prices ($0.17/kWh home, $0.48/kWh public, $3.20/gal gas) are examples: replace them with your utility rate and local prices.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an EV per month?

Driving 1,000 miles a month at about 3.5 mi/kWh uses roughly 315 kWh, about $53 at $0.17/kWh if you charge at home.

Is charging an EV cheaper than gas?

Charging at home usually costs a half to a third of gas per mile. Relying only on DC fast chargers can cost about the same as an efficient gas car.
