    Area factors are the square of the length factors: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², exactly. Forgetting to square is the most common mistake in area conversions.

    • Square feet (sq ft): US and Canadian real estate, flooring, drywall and paint coverage.
    • Square meters (m²): floor area almost everywhere else.
    • Acre: US land, 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.856 m², about 91% of an American football field without the end zones.
    • Hectare: 100 m × 100 m = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres. Farmland outside the US.
    • Square mile: 640 acres = 2.58999 km².

    Worked example

    A 12 ft × 14 ft bedroom is 168 sq ft: 168 × 0.09290304 = 15.61 m². A 5-acre lot is 5 × 0.404686 = 2.023 ha.
